I first met Wolf when I started working as a young chemical engineer at Mintek in 1985. We shared many interests, and had a similar outlook on life, and we soon struck up a good friendship. We worked on various computer programs together, including Thermo which is still used all around the world. After Wolf moved on from Mintek, we set up a small company, in his name, called Philosoft CC, and it is still going strong today, now that Debbie and I have taken it over. I still remember one memorable evening, when Wolf and I worked on a particularly challenging programming problem at Wolf and Shelly's flat in Bellevue, and emerged very late only to discover that my car had been stolen. Wolf kindly took me home.
Wolf has been one of my very closest friends for almost forty years. We kept in touch by e-mail, and I cherish the many letters I received (especially around the time of birthdays) from him. I am particularly pleased to have been able to visit him and Shelly at their lovely home in Perth, some years ago. The news of his passing came as a great shock to me. I am very sad to think that I won't see my good friend again in this lifetime. He was a very special person - truly one of a kind. He was one of the most intelligent, capable, and skilled engineers I know, yet was always unpretentious, generous, kind, caring, and compassionate. I will miss him very much.
It was a great shock to me when I received a message from Shelly saying that Wolf was taken by ambulance and admitted to the ICU at the Royal Perth Hospital early on Monday morning 8 April. He had a lung infection which wasn't able to be treated successfully, and he rapidly deteriorated, finally drawing his last breath, with Shelly at his side, at half past seven on Sunday morning 21 April 2024.
